I’m not sure if I’m posting this piece in a correct section or not. Let me know if it happens to land into wrong section.
Recently I looking for some good and cheap payment gateway vendors, for my small e-commerce application. The target client base is all Indian and currency would be all INR. I ran into issues like – If I get services of vendors based out of US, then I save on cost involved, but then I have to deal with only credit cards. And If I want to support internet banking and debit card usage then I have to use the vendor services available in India, which is quite costly.
From here I started thinking of building my own payment gateway and I was stuck up soon with so many hurdles in my way. I don’t know how to develop a payment gateway, the technologies involved, the kind of logistics required, how to get the banks on board for online banking and all. I’m hoping to get some directions from all the experienced people here on VentureWoods.
Thanks,
Suhas

Mohan/Krish,
Thanks for your inputs, I am not aware of the efforts involved in implementing own payment gateway. My transaction size would not be too great to profit after paying the Indian vendors.

Thanks Vijay,
I had been to CCAvenue’s site. There is one more vendor in india, Transcute. From the look and feel of the website I started doubting their services.
I was going through the paypal’s instructions on how commission is charged and I got a little bit confused over there. I also checked Plimus.
Could you tell me between Paypal and Plimus, which one is better, if you happen to have any feedback on Plimus?
how much do you loose while converting the currency in Paypal?
Here’s one:

Suhas,
There are quite a few payment gateways that are available for INR transactions. The percentage commission they charge seems a bit higher than what Paypal charges – which is the reason why we went with that for Proto.in and a few other cases with the companies that I am working with, and also since Paypal allows you to transfer INR to a bank, its not much trouble.
Of course this all depends on what volume of transaction you are looking at. The currency conversation and reconversion will take away a percentage out of your revenue along with the commission with the Paypal option.
But do look up for payment gateways, I am quite positive that there are some indian ones. Will update if i find the name – calling a few people.
Hi Suhas,
You could try

I think quite a few indian e-commerce retailers use it and it should suit your purpose.
