SINE — the incubator at IIT Mumbai, seems to have made better progress than a couple of other initiatives I have seen around. The core strength seems to be the ability to merge institutes’ strengths in technology (through students and faculty members) with experience from industry. A fair number of startups seem to involve experienced operational people. This is unlike some other incubators I have seen which tend to (either formally or informally) limit the participation to students and faculty alone.

Hi, I was the founder of one of the early companies incubated at IIT Bombay. I think whats best about IIT Bombay is the entire culture. An incubator is only one part of the picture. IIT Bombay also has a very strong Entrepreneurship cell which is responsible for organizing lectures by ex-entrepreneurs, VCs, consultants etc. which are open for all students to attend. Apart from giving on ground knowledge about tactical and fundamental issues around entrepreneurship this also exposes the students to other entrepreneurs who share similar backgrounds which also helps them build their rolodex early on with possible investors, mentors and partners. Apart from this we have two very large student festivals -Mood Indigo and Techfest which are completely organized by students. These have budgets of over 30-40L each and funds are generated by student volunteers. Apart from this, I would not discount the effect of breathing bombay’s air ;-).
cheers,

I think they provide limited cash (around 10 lacs) in addition to the facilities.
I would like to know whether IIT incubator helps in starting the company..i.e provide some initial startup money..or they provide just incubation help, turning idea into prototype..
Yeah it is nice. Though I was never part of any startup in IIT Bombay (I am part of one outside), I have heard good things about the prof – investor – employee relation. I think it is a matter of culture; IITB fosters an entrepreneurial culture.
