Open Coffee Club’s (OCC) third meet happened successfully in Bangalore yesterday. OCC has been getting good amount of traction in Bangalore since the day it kick off.
However, my key aim of writing this post is not to publicize OCC, rather, to ask a straight and simple question. ( This question was asked by one of the associates from OCC, yesterday).
What is a Startup?
My question however, doesn’t end with this, because, today’s startup wont be a startup tomorrow. How do we say or how do we differentiate between a Startup and a mid size company?
Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Vaibhav

A startup is a stratup till the time it starts generating profits and displays a growth patern… i know this is more of a laymans def. but this is probably my idea about a startup!
Thanks to you all.. It was pretty interesting reading all the comments.
Startup is more a mindset within the team. Technically we could draw a timeline, but it is essential that a team whether working as a independent unit or as a part of a larger organisation remains a startup if it has to drive innovation and out-of-the box thinking. The recent structural evolution of tech corporates on one hand and operational evolution of tech business indicate that the dividing line is getting thinner between a team within a company and a seperate business. Finally it is all to do with as much stakeholders you have for your team and ideas. And what all stakeholders (internal or external customers) will look from you is start up mindset – less of inertia, faster turnaround, commitment and agility.
I would say 18 months. You are no longer a startup after that. You either made it or have turned into a not-so-interesting company after that.
Krish simply sums it all up !! gr8 🙂 !! especially the way you ended it !
